Professor Shi Anbin, Associate Dean of International Development, discussed faculty and student exchanges with Bradley Hamm, dean of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, during a visit on Tuesday May 21.
Jenna Massey, Director of Asia Initiatives, was particularly interested in developing exchanges in Integrated Marketing and Communications, her specialty. Medill, based in Chicago, is one of the largest and most prestigious journalism schools in the U.S. and has many alumni in leading media.
Dr.Wang Weijia, whose specialty is in media industry workers, expressed an interest in having Tsinghua and Medill faculty visit each others' campuses to sit in on classes, give lectures, and do joint research.
Medill already has many Chinese students enrolled in its courses, and Dean Hamm said he would like to see more. He offered to reserve some spaces for Tsinghua students who want to apply. In addition he would like to see an increase in the number of Medill students who gain international experience during their course work, particularly in China.
Dean Shi said Tsinghua will provide a scholarship to a top Medill graduate to participate in Tsinghua's M.A. in Global Business Journalism program. He said the GBJ program also would like to have Medill faculty with experience in multimedia and business reporting come to the campus to teach for one or two semesters.
The two deans discussed other exchanges of Ph.D. candidates and faculty, joint faculty research projects, and joint participation in a conference on integrated marketing and communication in 2014.
