Deans of the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and Communication came to Tsinghua June 3 to discuss student and faculty exchanges.
Dean Susan King, Dean Emeritus Richard Cole and Associate Dean Louise Spieler met with Professor SHI Anbin, Associate Dean of International Development, Dr. HANG Min, Associate Professor and Co-Director of MA Program in Global Business Journalism, Dr. ZHOU Qing'an(Andy), Associate Professor and Director of MA program in International Journalism and Dr. CAO Shule, Assistant Professor.
The University of North Carolina is well known for its business journalism program and its Ph.D. program in journalism, making it a natural partner with Tsinghua, which also has strengths in these areas. Both schools have significant programs in integrated marketing and communication and both are seeking to enroll more students from each other's country.
Associate Dean Shi and Dean King discussed the possibility of exchanges on a number of levels:
• Awarding scholarships in their master's programs to outstanding graduates of the other school
• Providing tuition waiver and a research supervisor to master's and Ph.D. candidates of each other's school
• Faculty exchanges in the areas of multimedia journalism, data journalism, entrepreneurial journalism or strategic communication
• A joint conference on international communication, social media, strategic communication or integrated marketing and communication
• A long-term joint degree program at the master's level
Dean King noted that Tsinghua's Bloomberg professor, Lee Miller, attended graduate school at North Carolina.
Later that evening, Professor Miller and Professor James Breiner of the Global Business Journalism Program attended a reception for the UNC delegation, the university's alumni, and professors of other universities at the offices of communications firm Burson-Marsteller in downtown Beijing.
Miller reminisced with Emeritus Dean Cole, who was his professor at UNC.
