British Scholar Discussed Investigative Reporting with Tsinghua Students

Hugo de Burgh, a professor from the China Media Center at Westminster University in the United Kingdom, completed his first visit to the School of Journalism and Communication by giving a lecture on “British Media and its Characteristics” on November 6.

During his three-week visit to Tsinghua University, Prof. de Burgh lectured three times on different topics relating to British media and documentaries. In his first lecture about investigative reporting on October 23, he introduced the techniques of British investigative reporting to the Chinese students in the Workshop for Basic English News Reporting class. He describes the history, importance, characteristics, current development and ethical problems of British investigative reporting.

In his second lecture on November 5, he spoke during the workshop of the Film and TV Production class about actuality documentaries, investigative documentaries and docu-dramas in Britain.

On November 6, Prof.de Burgh gave the third-year undergraduates a general introduction to British media. Using interesting figures and detailed charts, Prof. de Burgh brought new knowledge on British media to the students based on the difference between various fields in the rapidly changing media world.

Prof. de Burgh is an expert on Chinese media. His documentary “The West You Don’t Really Know” was a hit this January, and the book of the same title is an international best-seller.

This visit was his first to Tsinghua’s School of Journalism and Communication. He is scheduled to return to TSJC in late November to continue his academic activities with its faculties and students.
