Tsinghua Journalism School Alumni Celebrate 7th Year of Global Business Journalism

China's first Global Business Journalism (GBJ) program was celebrated at an annual party by alumni who now work at media including Xinhua News Agency, the People's Daily, CCTV, China Daily and Bloomberg News. GBJ program was established at Tsinghua University in 2007, and now counts about 200 master's degree graduates and candidates.

The reception on Dec. 20, 2013 was co-hosted by alumni association executive committee member Stephen Tan of Bloomberg News and Paul Wong, who now runs a successful consulting company. Tan and Wong were among GBJ's original graduates. Professor Emeritus Wang Jianhua, currently the Secretary-General of alumni affairs, was guest of honor at the dinner event.

"Alumni activities such as these are very important because it gives us the chance to meet our predecessor and successors," said Irene Wang, who graduated in 2013 and now works in the international news division of Xinhua. "By meeting and keeping up with our GBJ colleagues, we can help each other in the future."

This was the second year the Alumni Association had the year-end party. Dr. HANG Min, Associate Professor and Co-Director of MA Program in Global Business Journalism offered words of praise to start a session when about 30 attendees talked about their current jobs and future plans. Visiting Professor Lee Miller, an original GBJ faculty member and Bloomberg editor-at-large, said he was impressed with the awards, news exclusives and business acumen of the graduates.

Each alumnus wore a color-coded ID badge based on the year they graduated from the program, founded in partnership between Tsinghua and the International Center for Journalists. The dinner event, with a buffet of Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai food, was held in the reception hall of Bloomberg's Beijing Bureau.

One of the goals set out at TSJC's 10th year anniversary in 2012 was to increase the alumni network. The GBJ group has become one of the most active, with events aimed at keeping people up-to-date on a group of graduates spanning not only China but also across Europe, The Americas, Africa and Asia Pacific.
