Professor Guo is currently a member of the State Council’s Assessment Group on Journalism and Communication Degree. He is also the Director of the journalism branch of the China Council for Self-taught Higher Education Examinations and Chief Supervisor of Beijing Association of Online Media. Professor Guo received his BA degree in Journalism from Renmin University of China in 1982 and continued his postgraduate study at the University of Tokyo. He received MA in Sociology in 1987. After finishing the PhD courses, he returned to China in 1992. Before joining the faculty at Tsinghua in 2009, he was Professor, vice Dean (1997-1998) and Dean (1999-2005) of the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University.
Professor Guo has taken charge of several important research programs concerning communication education and media operation, such as Renmin University "985 research program" of Integration and Innovation of Journalism and Communication in New Century and important research program of Chinese Media Operation and Media Economy Policy by Ministry of Education. Among his publications, Introduction to Communication Theories (China Renmin University Press, 1999) is especially influential, winning the second prize of the 6th Beijing Municipal Prize for Excellent Social Science Research in 2000 and the first prize of the Excellent Textbook by the Ministry of Education. Professor Guo was awarded "Outstanding Journalism Practitioner" of Beijing in 2004.
