How to Apply
Applicants should complete the Online Application on the website of the THU Graduate Programs Application System for International Students during the designated THU application period. Applicants should fill in the application information online, upload the application documents listed below to the Online Application System, and pay the application fee online at the time of submission. The online application system of Tsinghua University for 2020 applicants will be open on October 15, 2019. The URL for online application website is gradadmission.tsinghua.edu.cn.
1. Qualification of Applicants
1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.
2) Applicants for master’s degree programs should have a bachelor’s degree.
2. Application Schedule
First Round： October 15, 2019 -- December 15, 2019
Second Round： December 15, 2019 -- March 1, 2020
Please note that for applicants for the Chinese Government Scholarship or other scholarships, applications should be submitted before December 31, 2019.
3. Application Documents
1) Personal statement. Master's degree program applicants should submit a Personal Statement.
2) Degree certificate. Master's degree program applicants should submit their Bachelor's degree certificate. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit both their Master's and Bachelor's degree certificates. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline must provide a pre-graduation certificate from their current academic institution. In this case, the degree certificate must be submitted before registration.
3) Academic transcript. Master's degree program applicants should submit the academic transcript of their undergraduate study. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit academic transcripts of both their graduate and undergraduate studies. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline must provide their current academic transcript .In this case, the completed academic transcript must be submitted before registration.
4) Two online academic recommendation letters from scholars who have the title of associate professor or higher, or senior professionals in a related academic field. Please follow the instructions on the online system for submission of online recommendation letters or upload the recommendation letters signed by references.
5) For non-English-speaking students, please provide English level certificates. e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, etc.
6) Passport personal information page (personal and ordinary passport).
Note：Use the online application to apply. The online application offers tools for collecting and submitting some, but not all, of the documents and information required for application.
4. Application Remarks
Applicants are required to submit scanned images of all required documents at the time of application. All uploaded documents should be in Chinese or in English; otherwise notarial translations in Chinese or English are required. Once translated, the original documents and certified translations are to be submitted together to the application system.
Please scan the original or notarial application documents in color using a scanner. Documents images captured by mobile phone or camera are not acceptable. Copies are also not acceptable.
The application fee must be paid at the time the application is submitted. (It cannot be covered by the Chinese Government Scholarship). THU is not responsible for errors made by applicants during the application process. There are no application fee refunds.
Applications with incomplete documents or without application fee payment will not be processed.
THU has the right to request that applicants provide the original or notarial hardcopies of application documents for further qualification checks if the uploaded documents are not sufficient.
None of the above application documents will be returned.
Applicants shall guarantee that all the information and application documents submitted in this application are authentic and accurate. If the admission departments or certification authorities verify that the application information or documents are false, positive admission decisions will be cancelled .Students will also be disqualified from enrollment and study even if they have been admitted.
Applicants who are found to be in breach of academic ethics, professional ethics, honesty and trustworthiness, etc., will not be admitted or admission/study qualification will be cancelled after this breach has been verified.
5. Evaluation and Admission
THU enrolls students by document evaluation together with matriculation examination. The admission committee of the applicable department/school will review the application documents and select applicants for further examination. The examination will be made by one of the following methods: ①Interview Exemption; ②Personal Interview. If an interview is required for admission, the department/school will contact the applicant directly to set up an interview appointment; and provide information about the interview process.
Admission to the graduate program is determined at the department/school level with oversight by Tsinghua University according to the result of document review, result of interview, and other factors. Certificate of Admission will be issued by THU Graduate Admission Office after the final admission result is released.
Tsinghua University mainly offers two kinds of scholarships to prospective full-time international graduate students: Full Scholarship and Tuition Scholarship.
The Full Scholarships, e.g. Chinese Government Scholarship, usually cover tuition, stipend, on-campus accommodation, and medical insurance. Annual Review is strictly required.
The Tuition Scholarships cover full or partial tuition fee support with a duration of one academic year. Applicants may apply for Tuition Scholarships annually (competitive).

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS). Applications should be submitted to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) (Website: http://www.csc.edu.cn) through recommendation by Chinese Embassies or Consulates or relevant organizations in applicant home countries between November and April (deadlines vary by country). Applicants are recommended to identify their respective countries’ application deadlines well in advance. A certificate of conditional acceptance should be obtained from the THU Graduate Admission Office beforehand if necessary. Admission documents of Chinese Government Scholarship holders will be issued by recommending scholarship organizations (excluding scholarship holders recommended by Tsinghua University).
Applicants may also apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship with recommendation from Tsinghua University. But the number of the recommended applicants is very limited, and successful applicants are generally of remarkable merit among those who are not currently studying in China.
In addition to the Chinese Government Scholarship, applicants may choose to apply for the Tuition Fee Scholarship (for master’s degree programs)/Tsinghua University Scholarship (for doctoral degree Programs), which will typically support full, half, or partial tuition.
Due to limited dormitory capacity, on-campus rooms can only be reserved for those who have successfully applied online. For Chinese Government Scholarship (full-scholarship) recipients, a dormitory on campus will be reserved by the University. Those who fail to apply for the dorm online have to find off-campus accommodation independently.

8. Visa Application and Registration
Admitted students should apply for a student visa (X1 visa). In order to do so, they must take the following documents to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China in their home country. The required documents are: personal and ordinary passport, Certificate of Admission, Visa Application Form (JW202/JW201), and original Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (as well as other original documents of physical examination). Students must enter China with an ordinary passport and X1 visa, and must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China.
Students are required to arrive at THU (along with the original versions of required documents) and complete their university registration during the dates indicated in the Admission package.
Normally, registration is held in late August. All students should present the required original degree certificates, and submit the degree copies certified by degree conferring institutions or certification authorities upon registration at Tsinghua University for enrollment qualification review. Students who fail the enrollment qualification review will be disqualified from enrollment and study at Tsinghua University.
9.Costs (Unit: RMB Yuan)
(1) Application Fee: RMB 800
(2) Tuition Fee: RMB 39000 /year.
(3) Accidental Injury and Hospitalization Insurance: RMB 800/year.
(4) Accommodation: RMB 80/day·bed for single rooms and AB rooms, RMB 40/day·bed for double rooms in student dormitories.
Applicant, who has any objection to the admissions process of the school/department, may file a complaint to the school/department in written form. The school/department should accept the complaint and respond. If the complainant disagrees with the reply, the complainant may appeal to the Graduate Admissions Office.
