The ceremony for the First Fan Jingyi Journalism Education Awards was held at Tsinghua University on April 28th. Eight students from various universities including Tsinghua, Peking University, and Renmin University of China, won the Excellent Student of Journalism Award, which is given to those who display outstanding motivation and academic performance related to the fields of journalism and communication, and who also display a strong sense of ethical values.

Fang Hanqi, Professor at Renmin University of China, along with Si Jiuyue, Professor at Tsinghua University, were both honored with the Excellent Teacher of Journalism Award, given to those who show outstanding achievement in journalism education. This year, the Friend to Journalism Award, was given to Bai Yansong, a well-known news anchor from CCTV.

According to Yin Hong, Executive Vice Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, the Fan Jingyi Journalism Education Awards, supported by the Fan Jingyi Journalism Education Fund, is awarded once a year and is now the only award for journalism education in China.

Mr. Fan Jingyi (1931-2010), was a well-known pressman in China. He was once Chief Editor of both the Economic Daily, and the People’s Daily, and was also the first Dean of School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, from 2002 until his death. Mr. Fan promoted several important principles for journalism education during his career. In particular, he is remembered for the following two ideals, “quality oriented, practice centered” and “master training for the main stream”.

“Today's awards are just the beginning”, said Liu Binjie, Director of the Fan Jingyi Journalism Education Foundation, Chairman of the NPC Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee, and current Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University. Liu hopes that journalism education will receive more attention and support from both individuals and organizations, from within the media industry, in the future.
