By MENG, Dongxue

Professor SHI, Anbin, Associate Dean of International Development, speaks on CCTV on September 4, to analyze the lawsuit of Google and Microsoft against the U.S. government. This month, the two long-time competitors are joining hands to sue the U.S. department of justice for more freedom to reveal what data they have been asked to supply about their customers. Prof. Shi would not see this lawsuit as a fight between the U.S. government and the hi-tech companies, because both sides have their reputations at stake and are trying to minimize the damages caused by PRISM to their image. According to him, these two transnational corporations have played a crucial role in the surveillance program since they have the advantage of using resources via thousands of branches around the world, and yet to meet only the U.S. national interests. In the context of globalization, Prof. Shi thinks transnational companies will have to serve the international community as well as respect the international law.
