Prof. Bradley Hamm, the dean of Medill School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications visited Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communication (TSJC) and lectured on “The Trends in Journalism” on Oct. 14.
Prof. Hamm’s discussion with graduate students from School of Journalism and Communication concerned the future development of journalism and the media industry, particularly from the perspective of agenda-setting “Actually I am not pessimistic about the future of printed media and new media never kills old media,” he said. “New revolution doesn’t change everything and bright people coming to this field need to question things with a critical attitude.”
Dr. HANG Min, Associate Professor and Co-Director of the MA Program in Global Business Journalism, concluded the lecture by summarizing the key points and urged students to keep up with the changes within the journalism industry.
After the lecture, Prof. Hamm and Prof. JIN Jianbin, the Administrative Dean of School of Journalism and Communication, discussed details of cooperation between the two schools and signed a cooperative agreement. The partnership between the two schools will allow student exchanges from both sides.
Prof. Hamm also gave an interview to two first year graduate students, Tian Yuanyuan and Zhou Quan from the International Journalism and Communication program. During the interview, Prof. Hamm discussed the various campuses of Medill in Washington, D.C., Silicon Valley, Evanston and Chicago, as well as highlighting the uniqueness of its curriculum design. While talking about the criteria for qualified candidates, Prof Hamm said, “We prefer students have the passion for innovation because there are challenges in this industry in this information era, and bright people could understand and survive, then flourish.”
The Medill School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications is a constituent school of Northwestern University that offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. It has consistently been ranked one of the top schools of journalism in the United States. Medill alumni include 38 Pulitzer Prize laureates, numerous national correspondents for major networks, and many well-known reporters and columnists.
