Professor SHI Anbin speaks on CCTV about Shanghai Stampede on New Year's Eve

Professor SHI, Anbin, Associate Dean of International Development, speaks on CCTV on January 5th, 2015, to analyze the lessons that can be drawn from the stampede incident in Shanghai's landmark, the Bund, on the new year's eve. Though China has become the World's largest economy with Shanghai as the star metropolis and epitome of China' modernization, the tragedy reminds us of the fact that China is still a developing country in terms of public administration and crisis management. This incident is largly avoidable, had the local government done a well-wrought risk management and crowd control. However, the local authorities simply canceled the celebration, assuming that there would be much fewer people in presence than ever. Students and migrant workers still gathered and the absence of governance and administration led to this tragedy. Plus media ethics should be also mentioned to avoid the "secondary victimization" of those who lost their life.
