Bloomberg's chief Asia economist visits Tsinghua University

Tom Orlik, Chief Asia Economist for Bloomberg, visited Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communication (TSJC) and gave a lecture entitled “How to understand economic indicators” on March 23, 2015.

Orlik shared his opinions on how to acquire and examine economic data with an example of searching for and analyzing metal prices on the Bloomberg terminal. He also provided perspective on the wealth of information available in financial reports from companies, government websites and global agencies such as the International Monetary Fund.

Orlik also held a question-and-answer session on data mining and data visualization with students from the Global Business Journalism program, after sharing his own stories on Chinese economy.

“I think what you need is patience, determination and curiosity,” said Orlik, as he answered a student's question on the challenge of mathematics in financial journalism.

Professor Hang Min of Tsinghua University's School of Journalism and Communication, hosted the talk, which is part of the ongoing Bloomberg Lecture Series. Professor Lee Miller, who also is editor-at-large of Bloomberg, delivered the introduction. ( by Liang Shuang)
