Michael Bloomberg met a group of Tsinghua University alumni, students and faculty in the Beijing office of Bloomberg LP, the financial news and information company he founded, during his recent trip to China.

The group celebrated the eight-year anniversary of the Bloomberg-supported Tsinghua University Global Business Journalism (GBJ) program, the first and largest media project of its kind in China. Tsinghua GBJ is a master's degree program that now has more than 230 alumni working for such organizations as Bloomberg News, CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, China Daily and the People's Daily.

The photo shows Mr. Bloomberg (center) with Yang Sheng, Greater China Managing Editor John Liu, Penny Peng (GBJ 2011), Zongyang Tan (GBJ 2010), Haixing Jin (GBJ 2010) and Tsinghua Professor Lee Miller, who is also Editor-at-Large. The International Center for Journalists is the main GBJ partner.

The visit to China was Mr. Bloomberg's first since he rejoined his financial information company after serving as mayor of New York City for 12 years. Mr. Bloomberg is also United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change.

A learning laboratory with 10 Bloomberg terminals is a centerpiece of the Tsinghua GBJ project, which helps train aspiring media professionals in financial journalism by using the same information platform as global financial professionals.

In addition to Chinese graduates, GBJ has more than 200 alumni and students from more than 50 countries, including Australia, Zimbabwe, Yemen, Israel, the U.S., Russia and Turkey. The GBJ project was spearheaded in 2007 by Tsinghua faculty, ICFJ and Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief Emeritus Matthew Winkler. (by Liang Shuang)
